This accident occurred at approximately 3:30am on Highway
60 east of
Salem in front of Mount Motors. During a severe thunder storm
lightning struck a tree adjacent to the highway causing the tree to split
and half fell across both lanes of the highway. The white van was
traveling west and struck the tree. The blue car was driving east and
struck the tree going through the top portion and struck the van on the
other side. The red truck was also going east and struck the tree.
All driver stated that it was raining so hard that they were unable to see
the tree in time to avoid the collision. The drivers of the van and
car were transported to Washington County Hospital for minor injuries. Onscene were Salem City Police officers, Washington County Sheriff's Dept.
and Washington County Ambulance.
